  • 2010 European Jiu-Jitsu Championships Results – Day Two

Posted on January 29th, 2010 admin No comments

Roberto Torralbas (Third Law BJJ) defeated Daniel Holm (Checkmat BJJ) 6-0 with a takedown and back take.

Roberto Torralbas won his 2nd match 2-0.

In the quarterfinals, Roberto faced off against Bruno Goncalves (Gracie Barra).  Goncalves scored first with a quarter-guard sweep and Roberto came back with a sweep of his own, tying the score at 2-2.  The match ended with Roberto having folded Goncalves legs.  We were confident in the referee’s decision but the official raised the other competitor’s hand.  Unfortunately, that is the way it goes if the match goes to a referee’s decision.

Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge won his first match 12-0 vs. Tulle Edman (Nacka Dojo).  Jon was able to control from the top position and repeatedly pass for the victory.

Jon Delbrugge squared off against his first opponent

Jon’s next opponent was the returning champion from last year, Janne Autio (Alliance Europe).  Most of the match was in Jon’s half-guard with Janne stabilizing the position.  Halfway through the match, Jon fell privy to a tight Kimura which forced the tapout.

Tomorrow is the Brown Belts and Black Belt Open!

  • US Grappling – Mid-Atlantic Grappling Championship 2 Results

Posted on January 23rd, 2010 admin 1 comment

Today was the third straight weekend of grappling competitions for Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This time, we sent a few of our grapplers to US Grappling’s event in Boothwyn, PA.

Russell Atkinson won his first tournament match ever via triangle choke before losing in the following round.  Great job by Russ who has made tremendous improvement in his Jiu-Jitsu.  When he first started, he struggled through the warmup and now he is doing multiple classes a day and competing!

Scott Heindl rebounded from a first round loss in his weight class to win the Beginner Open division: 12-0, 9-2, and  7-0.  This was Scott’s first tournament!

A Hat Trick for David Zwanetz as he won his third blue belt division in as many weeks.  Dave received a bye in the 1st round, flash-triangled his 2nd opponent, and then defeated the 2009 Blue Belt Galo World Silver medalist in the Finals.  Great job by Dave who weighed in at 123 for the 123-135.5 lb weight class.

Mike Easton and Frank “The Crank” Camacho visited our Baltimore MMA school to give a seminar on Mixed Martial Arts.  Even with short notice and a grappling competition on the same day, we had good turnout for the event.  The seminar covered everything from the feet to the ground, from wrestling to ground and pound.

Mike is professional fighter and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt with victories in multiple promotions.  Frank Camacho is a young fighter (under 20 years old) from Guam who moved to Maryland just to train at Lloyd Irvin MMA academy.  Between the two of them, they have close to 20 professional MMA fights so it was great to have them in the room, sharing their knowledge.

Mike has an upcoming fight in Tennessee in February and is also considering doing the Abu Dhabi Gi next weekend.  Frank, despite dominantly winning his last fight, plans to focus on his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training (he already has great standup) this year before getting back into the cage.  They are true Mixed Martial Artists!

  • More Night Martial Arts Classes Added

Posted on January 18th, 2010 admin No comments

Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has expanded its schedule to include additional late evening martial arts classes. For all you night owls, we will now have Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes at 10 PM, Monday through Thursday!

If you have been reading our blog, you’ll know that one of our goals for 2010 is to expand to a 24 hours schedule so our clients can train at their convenience.  The BJJ classes are the first step toward that goal; we hope to add Muay Thai Kickboxing classes as well as Mixed Martial Arts classes to the late evenings and then to the early mornings to give the full spectrum of realistic martial arts training at any time.

Please give us call at (443) 283-1450 if you need to expand your training plan to include the additional classes.

  • Results: Baltimore BJJ Championships by The Good Fight

Posted on January 16th, 2010 admin 4 comments

Today we sent a few of our Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Columbia Childrens Martial Arts competitors to the local Baltimore grappling tournament run by The Good Fight.  It has been a while since a promoter tried to run a grappling-only competition in the Baltimore area (actually, I don’t know if one has ever tried) but it would certainly be convenient if the tournaments become profitable enough for promoters to consistently run tournaments here.

Seth Fillers, and his sister, Vanessa Fillers, started the day off for Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Seth is one of our best kid grapplers and it showed as he mounted and armbarred his two opponents to take Gold in No Gi and followed it with an Americana and Rear Naked Choke for Gold in Gi.  Today was Vanessa’s first tournament and she fought great but the staff at the event messed up; they allowed Vanessa’s opponent to do submissions and he caught her in an armbar to end the bout – BUT- Vanessa was competing in the Beginner No-Submissions division.  Hopefully the staff at The Good Fight can be more aware of this kind of oversight in the future!

Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge had 4 matches total – all by submission to win Gold in his Purple Belt weight class and Purple Belt Open.

Matthew “Little” Burr won his matches 13-0, DQ (9-0 for Burr before slam), and 11-0 to win his division!

Jermaine “Big Burr” Mathis had two submissions and a points victory for his weight class championship.  He then went on to win the White Belt Open.

Clarence Melton and Kwami Mensah each won a match to close out their division.

“Rodeo” Brian Neal won Gold!  His first match was 14-0, not sure on 2nd.

Lawyer Dave scored 9 points on his first opponent before tapping him with a breadcutter choke and then trounced his finals opponent 12-2.

  • On the Mat Northeast Regionals Day 2

      Age Skill Weight Result
    Charles DimAwng Adult ??? ??? ???
Aungla Sang Adult Intermediate ??? 1st
         Advanced ??? 2nd

    space
Charles Dim Awng competed for the first time today and placed.  Charles is one of the hardest workers in the room and has been going full bore into his dream of becoming a successful MMA fighter.  He trains as much as he can, including physical conditioning as well as technical classes.  Starting so intensely at such a young age (19), he should have a bright future ahead of him.

Aungla “Ong Bak” Sang misjudged his own grappling skills (going by training time rather than actual skill level) and entered the Intermediate division where he easily submitted all his opponents.  He then competed in the Advanced division where he lost 2-0 in the finals to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt.

It’s great to Aungla get out there and compete as he is one of our hidden weapons in the training room.  He is an experienced MMA fighter and teaches our Columbia MMA classes as well as some Muay Thai classes.  His last fight was a submission victory over UFC veteran Christopher Price at C3, a Chicago-area promotion.  For religious reasons, he does not compete on Saturday mornings so it is tough for him to get to grappling tournaments so this Sunday competition worked out well.

  • On the Mat Northeast Regional Championships

Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu exploded into 2010 with the competition team being divided and sent to two tournaments. The Northbound squad headed to the OTM Northeast Regional Championship in the Philadelphia area while the Southbound squad drove to the Copa Nova competition to combine forces with Team Lloyd Irvin Camp Springs.

    Age Skill Weight Result
Evan Gideon Adult Blue Belt Heavyweight (<202 lbs) 1st

David Zwanetz Adult Blue Belt Super Feather (<134 lbs) 1st

Evan Gideon continued his string of victories with 4 submissions (3 chokes from the back and 1 mounted cross-choke) and then a 4-2 war in the finals of the Blue Belt Open division.

Clarence Melton won three hard-fought matches to win his first Blue Belt division.  He won his first match in OT, submitted his second opponent with a breadcutter, and won his final match 4-2 also in OT.  To celebrate his victory, he immediately settled himself off the mat where he vomited repeatedly into his gi (he is very mindful of the maintenance staff).  Clarence has repeatedly placed but always fell short of the top podium spot so this victory was the proverbial “monkey off his back.”

Travis Outten took double silver in his two divisions.  In the weight class, Travis took his first opponent down and passed his guard for a 5-0 win.  In the finals of that division, he went out of his comfort zone and wrestled the match on the feet where he came up short in a 0-4 loss.  In the White Belt Open, Travis got back to business, submitting his first opponent with an inverted triangle from top and finishing his second adversary with an armbar.  This was a ‘nice’ Open division where everyone was within 20 lbs of Travis until the Finals.  Travis fell behind on the scoreboard early but had some strong submission attempts on the big man to close out the time.  Solid performance.

David Zwanetz was able to get two matches actually in his weight class… unfortunately, they were against the same opponent.  Lawyer Dave caught the triangle 30 seconds into the first bout and then locked on another late into the second bout to win the two-out-of-three series.

Crazy 88 also had Eric Palmer and Tom Shrum make their first competition appearances as members of our Baltimore Jujutsu Team.  Both guys fought hard and we are glad to have them getting to work so early in 2010!

Results posted as they come in.

Wade “Gracie Barra” Laurent went 4-0 with no points scored against him this weekend.  He bowed out to Big Al in the semis of the Open and split 3rd with Hernan, after taking Gold in his weight class.

Frank Marinello won his blue belt debut with bow-and-arrow choke after an 8-0 lead.

Cathy Tran-Zwanetz won her match in typical Cathy style, passing the guard, mounting, and finishing with an ezekielle choke.

Crazy 88 continues to be the most productive martial arts school in the Baltimore area, producing successful competitor after successful competitor.  It is great to see all the hard work pay off and the results were amazing since many core competition team members were resting or preparing for the European Open!  Let’s keep up the pace and have a record-breaking 2010!
