Three Competitors – Four Medals so far for Crazy 88 BJJ Baltimore Jiu-Jitsu Team. 100% Medal Rate for Team Lloyd Irvin so far.
Evan “Oz” Gideon dominated his two opponents, finishing his first one off with a triangle and then submitting his second with a bow-and-arrow choke. Due to a bracketing mix-up, Evan received a bye into the semi-finals but like they say, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” The final match was especially sweet as it was against an opponent that had beaten Oz 2-0 at the US Nationals last year. This time, Oz left no doubt as he passed, mounted, and finished his opponent from the back.
In the Open, Evan faced Daniel Robb (Gracie Humaita). Super close match with a single advantage giving the “W” to Robb.
Tye Ryan Murphy submitted his first opponent via triangle and outpointed the second by 20+ points. In the quarterfinals, he faced one of Rafael Lovato’s blue belts who had taken 2nd at the American Nationals. Tye submitted him with a Kimura and then caught the semi-finals adversary with another triangle to enter the finals. In the finals, Tye was up 5-0 with approximately a minute left but fell prey to a Hail Mary armbar! A tough learning experience but an easy mistake to fix.
Tye came back hard in the Blue Belt Open battling through some TOUGH early round matches. He won his Elite Eight match 0-0 (3-2) and then gutted out a win the Final Four. The score was 2-2 with two advantages for Tye. Tye’s opponent locked on a tight triangle but Tye held out until the buzzer winning by one advantage! In the Finals, Tye dismantled his opponent, mounting him and submitting him! Congrats to Tye Ryan Murphy on a BIG win!
“Big” Al Washington defeated Orlan Lyle (Gracie Barra) by Ezekiel choke and then Edgar Perez (Gracie Barra America) via 9-0. Final four – Al applies the Kimura to get a ticket to the Finals. The Championship match was a war; Al gave it everything he had but came up one point short in a 7-6 barnburner!
Also, congrats to Team Third Law (Florida Team Lloyd Irvin affiliate) – they had:
- Roberto Torralbas – 1st Adult Purple Middle, 2nd Adult Purple Open
- Kevin Dalton – 3rd Adult Blue Middle
- Kim Rivers – 1st Female White Feather
- Joey Ruggiero – 1st Adult White Light

2010 Pan Kids Jiu Jitsu Championships by Brian Neal
Posted on February 27th, 2010 No commentsGreetings from Carson California! Today is the day that we’ve been waiting for; the 2010 Pan Kids BJJ Tournament. We brought Seth and Brendon from Crazy 88 Baltimore.
First up was Seth Fillers, he had a five person bracket, so we needed two wins to take home gold. His opponent was from Coachella Valley. The match started with Seth using what we’ve been teaching all month, he got his grips, snapped his opponent down and when he reacted up Seth shot in for the double leg…two point lead! The next two minutes of the match was Seth trying to pass and his opponent trying for arm bars over and over. Seth was able to use the arm bar defense that Coach Danny has showed in the past and stepped over the head. Seth actually almost passed twice but the kid was taller than Seth and was able to return Seth to his guard. Seth tried the Coach Rodeo pass that we’ve been working on all month and let his arm slip up a little bit and the yellow belt was able to lock in the fight ending arm bar. While I admire Seth’s desire to continue fighting, as he didn’t tap to the submission attempt, the referee decided to halt the match with about a minute and a half remaining in the contest.
Next up was Brendan “Spike” Bill. Brendan’s bracket was a little larger than Seth’s with a total of eight competitors. This time we would need three wins to take gold. Spikes first opponent was from MMA LAB. The match started with both kids trying to get their grips. Spike and his opponent were engaged in a strong gripping battle; both kids showed great wrestling skills and attempted to take each other down with limited success. Spike shot in for a sweep single leg, his opponent was able to sprawl out, and Spike was forced to try and pull guard but was only able to get back to half guard. Spike was able to sweep his opponent quickly from his half guard using the half guard sweep. Spike fought the rest of the match on top with some great battles trying to pass his guard. With about 6 seconds left in the match, spikes opponent starting crying from an apparent knee to the place you never want knees to go. The ref stopped the match to ensure that he was ok and allowed the match to continue even though it states in the rules that if a match is stopped for crying that the match is over. Also, when they were restarted, they restarted back on the feet instead of with Spike on top passing. The ref restarts the match, the kid shoots in and takes spike down to win the match 2-2 2-1. Spike opponent was able to acquire his two advantages via close back takes while Spike was trying to pass.
While it’s not the ending that we had planned for, it’s a good experience for both the coaches and the kids. We picked up a lot of good information and are going to start putting it into the Childrens Martial Arts classes as soon as we get back!!

Seth Competes at the PGC as Warm-Up for Kids Pan Jiu Jitsu Championships
Posted on February 20th, 2010 No commentsWith the Kids Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships coming up next weekend, the Fillers family drove to the Philadelphia Grappling Championships in order to get Seth some more experience. Seth is one of our first students at our Baltimore Kids Mixed Martial Arts program and is one of our top Kids competitors.
At the tournament, Seth had three matches, winning two (video below). Seth used his solid takedowns and defense from on top to get the victories.
Due to the smaller size of the competition, the children’s weight classes were a bit more spread than usual so Seth also had a chance to wrestle a 110+ lb’er. Even though Seth did not win that one, it turned out to be good experience for future Adult Open divisions! Next week, Seth and Brendan “Spike-a-Doodle” will fly to Los Angeles for the first Kids Pan Ams so make sure you keep an eye on the site to keep up to date with the results!

Team Lloyd Irvin Goes 11-2 at the Gameness Fighting Championships
Posted on February 20th, 2010 No commentsTeam Lloyd Irvin made a splash at the Sixth Gameness Fighting Championships in Nashville, TN. We had thirteen fighters on the card (including many fighters making their MMA debut) and won eleven bouts (KO, Rear naked choke, Kimura, armbar, TKO due to strikes, triangle choke, tapout due to GnP, Unanimous decision, KO due to GnP, KO, and KO). It was a dominating performance by the team and also allowed showed the depth of the MMA skills being developed with fighters winning on the feet, on the ground, by strikes, and by submissions.
If you watch the highlight video above, you’ll get a chance to see some of the Camp Springs MMA guys in action. Watch DJ Jackson mount and punish his opponent and Ron Stallings get the TKO with some vicious GnP following a flash knockdown. Ron runs the Team Lloyd Irvin affiliate in Aberdeen, MD so if you are in Northern Maryland, make sure you check him out!

UGC XI Adrenaline Results
Posted on February 1st, 2010 No commentsCrazy 88 keeps pushing as Baltimore’s most active BJJ school. While one group of our competitors were in Portugal at the European Open BJJ Championships, another team drove to Hamburg, PA.
Here is a short description from one of our White Belts…
“Ashby 1st no-gi, 3rd gi
Shrum: 3rd gi beginnerCan’t remember Evan or Eric but they won theirs.I was confused as to the division I was in because Shrum and I should have been in the same division but we weren’t. Shrum said he saw on his bracket that it was beginner and that mine was “regular”? This was very “Bush League”, as I’ve heard you say before. Either way I went against two wrestlers with 3 and 13 years experience wrestling respectively in no-gi.”More specific details and match results will be posted as they come in. -
2010 European Jiu-Jitsu Championships Results – Day Two
Posted on January 29th, 2010 No commentsRoberto Torralbas (Third Law BJJ) defeated Daniel Holm (Checkmat BJJ) 6-0 with a takedown and back take.
Roberto Torralbas won his 2nd match 2-0.
In the quarterfinals, Roberto faced off against Bruno Goncalves (Gracie Barra). Goncalves scored first with a quarter-guard sweep and Roberto came back with a sweep of his own, tying the score at 2-2. The match ended with Roberto having folded Goncalves legs. We were confident in the referee’s decision but the official raised the other competitor’s hand. Unfortunately, that is the way it goes if the match goes to a referee’s decision.
Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge won his first match 12-0 vs. Tulle Edman (Nacka Dojo). Jon was able to control from the top position and repeatedly pass for the victory.
Jon’s next opponent was the returning champion from last year, Janne Autio (Alliance Europe). Most of the match was in Jon’s half-guard with Janne stabilizing the position. Halfway through the match, Jon fell privy to a tight Kimura which forced the tapout.
Tomorrow is the Brown Belts and Black Belt Open!

US Grappling – Mid-Atlantic Grappling Championship 2 Results
Posted on January 23rd, 2010 1 commentToday was the third straight weekend of grappling competitions for Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This time, we sent a few of our grapplers to US Grappling’s event in Boothwyn, PA.
Russell Atkinson won his first tournament match ever via triangle choke before losing in the following round. Great job by Russ who has made tremendous improvement in his Jiu-Jitsu. When he first started, he struggled through the warmup and now he is doing multiple classes a day and competing!
Scott Heindl rebounded from a first round loss in his weight class to win the Beginner Open division: 12-0, 9-2, and 7-0. This was Scott’s first tournament!
A Hat Trick for David Zwanetz as he won his third blue belt division in as many weeks. Dave received a bye in the 1st round, flash-triangled his 2nd opponent, and then defeated the 2009 Blue Belt Galo World Silver medalist in the Finals. Great job by Dave who weighed in at 123 for the 123-135.5 lb weight class.

Results: Baltimore BJJ Championships by The Good Fight
Posted on January 16th, 2010 3 commentsToday we sent a few of our Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Columbia Childrens Martial Arts competitors to the local Baltimore grappling tournament run by The Good Fight. It has been a while since a promoter tried to run a grappling-only competition in the Baltimore area (actually, I don’t know if one has ever tried) but it would certainly be convenient if the tournaments become profitable enough for promoters to consistently run tournaments here.
Seth Fillers, and his sister, Vanessa Fillers, started the day off for Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Seth is one of our best kid grapplers and it showed as he mounted and armbarred his two opponents to take Gold in No Gi and followed it with an Americana and Rear Naked Choke for Gold in Gi. Today was Vanessa’s first tournament and she fought great but the staff at the event messed up; they allowed Vanessa’s opponent to do submissions and he caught her in an armbar to end the bout – BUT- Vanessa was competing in the Beginner No-Submissions division. Hopefully the staff at The Good Fight can be more aware of this kind of oversight in the future!
Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge had 4 matches total – all by submission to win Gold in his Purple Belt weight class and Purple Belt Open.
Matthew “Little” Burr won his matches 13-0, DQ (9-0 for Burr before slam), and 11-0 to win his division!
Jermaine “Big Burr” Mathis had two submissions and a points victory for his weight class championship. He then went on to win the White Belt Open.
Clarence Melton and Kwami Mensah each won a match to close out their division.
“Rodeo” Brian Neal won Gold! His first match was 14-0, not sure on 2nd.
Lawyer Dave scored 9 points on his first opponent before tapping him with a breadcutter choke and then trounced his finals opponent 12-2.

On the Mat Northeast Regionals Day 2
Posted on January 10th, 2010 No commentsAge Skill Weight Result Charles DimAwng Adult ??? ??? ??? Aungla Sang Adult Intermediate ??? 1st Advanced ??? 2nd space
Charles Dim Awng competed for the first time today and placed. Charles is one of the hardest workers in the room and has been going full bore into his dream of becoming a successful MMA fighter. He trains as much as he can, including physical conditioning as well as technical classes. Starting so intensely at such a young age (19), he should have a bright future ahead of him.Aungla “Ong Bak” Sang misjudged his own grappling skills (going by training time rather than actual skill level) and entered the Intermediate division where he easily submitted all his opponents. He then competed in the Advanced division where he lost 2-0 in the finals to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt.
It’s great to Aungla get out there and compete as he is one of our hidden weapons in the training room. He is an experienced MMA fighter and teaches our Columbia MMA classes as well as some Muay Thai classes. His last fight was a submission victory over UFC veteran Christopher Price at C3, a Chicago-area promotion. For religious reasons, he does not compete on Saturday mornings so it is tough for him to get to grappling tournaments so this Sunday competition worked out well.
