  • Crazy 88 Coaches Present at Career Day at St Mark School

Posted on March 5th, 2010 admin No comments

Hello everyone, it’s Coach Rodeo again! For the second year in a row Crazy 88 BJJ Kids Martial Arts program instructors made an appearance at St Mark school of Catonsville’s Career Day. Last year, Coach Danny and I went in and gave a 20 minute presentation to three 1st grade classes. If you don’t know him, my son Tyler, is a student there.

This year Coach Jon and I would be the instructors to attend Career Day looking to find some future World champions. Last year, Career Day was such a success that they were completely booked and we were on the waiting list. Well, as luck would have it, a presenter had to pull out and we got the call to come in. This time we would be showing off our moves to the 6th grade classes. Apparently we made an impression last year as many parents and students remembered us. Even the assistant principal Mr. Carl Berger, said he was expecting us as wrestling season was winding down.

Coach Jon and I showed up at 8:15 in the morning and were in the classroom by 8:30. The kids were very excited to see us and very enthusiastic. It wasn’t hard for us to find volunteers for our moves. We started the day off with explaining who we were and what Jiu Jitsu was all about. We talked to them about some of the rules that we have here in the Kids Martial Arts program and what a normal class was like. We then asked for some volunteers to run through some exercises. We had them do jumping jacks, pushups, and fast feet (otherwise known as burpies). We decided to show them some Self defense moves. There wasn’t a problem finding eager students ready to impress their fellow students with their moves! The first thing we showed them was the 1-2 combo; which they picked up very quickly so we added in the round kick. Lucky for me, I drew the short straw and was the kicking dummy and let me tell you; those kids can kick hard!

We ran out of time quickly as we did a short question and answer session with the kids. They had some very good questions and were very happy to have us. I know I speak for Coach Jon when I say, all in all, it was a great experience and can’t wait to go back next year. Hopefully we’ll see some new faces in the Kids program soon!

  • Brackets for the Houston BJJ Open Posted…

Alfonso Washington wants to redeem himself after a 0-0 Judges Decision at the European BJJ Championships. Al also has a Muay Thai smoker bout next weekend so he is keeping himself busy in all areas of fighting!

Big Al's Division - White Belt Ultra

Tye Ryan Murphy and Kevin Dalton are both looking to get solid IBJJF tournament experience. Tye had a strong showing at the European BJJ Championships where he won 3 before losing on points to the eventual champion and will build upon that to get onto the medal stand in Houston.  In Tye’s way is US Nationals medalist Trevor Cowan, who should be the biggest challenge on that page.  On the other side of the bracket is Team Third Law’s Kevin Dalton, who is one of Roberto’s most active competitors and also a political activist.

Evan “Oz” Gideon should have some good matches and is one of the favorites to win the division. Evan is looking forward to a rematch with Shiloh Roberts (Lovato BJJ) who defeated him by two points in the semi-finals of the US Nationals last year.  This is “Oz” first IBJJF tournament of the year and he is excited.  In 2009, with less than one year of training, he was able to make the Elite Eight of the PanAms and take double Bronze’s at the US Nationals – a solid foundation for the 2010 competition season.

  • Off to Leo Dalla’s for More Hard Training

Posted on February 14th, 2010 admin 1 comment

The hard training continued on Sunday with a few members of Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu heading down to Woodbridge, VA for Leo Dalla’s BJJ class.  We almost never get to train with Leo’s guys so it was great to get on the mat with Leo, Nakapan, and some of their top students.  Lloyd Irvin sent a few of his killers from Camp Springs as well.   The training had a lot of positional sparring and also some visualization exercises at the end to close out the session.

The preparation for the Houston International Open (BJJ), and the next round of Muay Thai and MMA smoker fights is going very well!

    Happy Valentines Day!

  • More Night Martial Arts Classes Added

Posted on January 18th, 2010 admin No comments

Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has expanded its schedule to include additional late evening martial arts classes. For all you night owls, we will now have Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes at 10 PM, Monday through Thursday!

If you have been reading our blog, you’ll know that one of our goals for 2010 is to expand to a 24 hours schedule so our clients can train at their convenience.  The BJJ classes are the first step toward that goal; we hope to add Muay Thai Kickboxing classes as well as Mixed Martial Arts classes to the late evenings and then to the early mornings to give the full spectrum of realistic martial arts training at any time.

Please give us call at (443) 283-1450 if you need to expand your training plan to include the additional classes.

This is a SERIOUS Training Room - Mike Easton, Mike Fowler, Nyjah Easton, Lloyd Irvin, Mike Atkin, Jon Delbrugge, Danny Ives, JC Cuffee, Don Achnick, Robbie Sanyal

Master Lloyd Irvin promoted Crazy 88 instructor, Mike Atkin to Brown Belt this morning!  Mike was Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s first ever student and has more International competition medals for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu than anyone else at the school.  Mike is an inspiration to all the students here – He is on the mats training almost everyday although he is in his mid-50′s.

Of course, Mike had to go through the brutal promotion gauntlet where he had to face everyone in the room in back-to-back matches with no break (and this time, it was after a full-blown training session with the killer squad).  It was a near-death experience but all worth it in the end.

  • Devastator In Brazil – Ready to Rumble after some Craziness!

Posted on December 4th, 2009 admin 1 comment

Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge got the call on Wednesday that Team Lloyd Irvin needed him to fly to Brazil to cover Mike Fowler and JT Torres as they compete in the World League Pro Jiu Jitsu Tournament in Sao Paulo, Brazil.  This would be a great opportunity for Jon as he would be able to make his debut in Brazil as well.  Because it is so expensive to fly to the USA, non-Black Belt Brazilian competitors often are unable to come the United States for tournament.  However, Brazil remains the dominant country in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition so it is valuable to begin competing against their talent early.

Jon had to make back to back trips to Washington DC to secure a visa, pack his stuff, drive to Camp Springs to pick up the film equipment, and then hop on a plane in under 24 hours.  Quite a feat but he is ready to go!

It looks like its going to a be a hell of a tournament…

  • Emergency Room Physicians Attend MMA Seminar

Dr. Veronica Deza & Jon Delbrugge at the MMA Safety Presentation

Dr. Veronica Deza & Jon Delbrugge at the MMA Safety Presentation

Dr. Veronica Deza invited the instructors of Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu up to Franklin Medical Hospital to speak on some of the medical issues involved with Mixed Martial Arts training. With the popularity of MMA increasing and the explosion of “MMA schools” trying to cash in on the trend, doctors will unfortunately be seeing a lot more injuries from MMA training. It is commendable that they are attending these presentations as to better understand the mechanics of the sport.

Dr. Deza is the mother of Aiden and Madeline who are both involved in our Childrens Martial Arts Program and is actively involved herself in the Womens Only Kickboxing.

Julius Park and Jon Delbrugge were on hand at Franklin Square Hospital to assist Dr. Veronica Deza with her talk on “Medical Issues in Martial Arts.”  Dr. Deza is the mother of Aiden and Madeline who are both involved in our Childrens Martial Arts Program.  We gave a short demonstration on MMA techniques and submission holds so the doctors would be more familiar with the mechanics of injury prevalent in MMA.
