  • Tyrone Eaton Promoted to Blue Belt

Posted on May 6th, 2010 admin 8 comments

Tyrone Eaton was promoted to Blue Belt tonight. Tyrone has been a great addition to our Baltimore Martial Arts team ever since Kwami Mensah, his brother-in-law, brought him. Tyrone brings strong wrestling ability and a good attitude to the mats and we are proud to have him represent Crazy 88 and Team Lloyd Irvin at the new belt.

Alfonso Washington AKA “Big Sal” received his Blue Belt. Big Sal just came off a Gold Medal at the IBJJF NY International Open and before that took Silver at the Houston International Open of BJJ. Big Sal also is 2-0 in MMA Smoker Fights and has 1 KO victory in Muay Thai. Great job!

Tyrone Eaton went 4-1 for the weekend, submitting his first three opponents with breadcutter chokes after passing their guards.  He won a close referee’s decision in the semifinals and lost on points to another very tough grappler from Team Lloyd Irvin; Tyrone came out on the losing end of a takedown scramble and spent the remainder of the match defending his back.  Strong performance from Kwami’s brother.

Evan “Oz” Gideon won 6-0 (4-0) in the Sweet 16 vs. a BJJ’er from Yamasaki Academy.  Oz then tapped the next two opponents with chokes from the back to close out the bracket with Frank Camacho.

Fred “Brad” Thomsen won a slobber-knocker first match 10-9 but fell victim to the eventual champion in the next bout.  Fred bumped up to Heavyweight in order to be “A” team and it was good to see how competitive he could be with the weight disadvantage.

Cathy Tran-Zwanetz submitted her first two opponents from the mount before losing in the semi-finals.

Team Lloyd Irvin Ladies - Kim Rivers (1st) & Cathy TZ (3rd)

Alfonso “Big Sal” Washington had a tough first match but dominated  his final three opponents, submitting all of them to win Gold!  Big Sal didn’t get a chance to work on his new quarter guard techniques but did manage to employ the footsweep he has been drilling.  Not bad for a guy who was having surgery less than a month ago!

“Lawyer” Dave Zwanetz won his first match 6-2 (back take and sweep), defeating the 2009 World Silver Medalist, and then submitted a tough grappler from Gracie Humaita in the Championship round.

2 of Crazy 88's Gold Medalists - David Zwanetz & Evan Gideon

    Also,

    • Jake “Bro Man” Huffman – GOLD @ White Belt Feather  *Jake is 15!*
    • Jeremiah West – SILVER @ Blue Belt Feather
    • Kevin McMullen – BRONZE @ Blue Belt Light
    • DJ Jackson – 2x GOLD @ Blue Belt Middle & Open
    • Kenneth Brown – BRONZE @ Blue Belt Ultra
    • Kimberly Rivers – GOLD @ Female Blue Belt Light Feather
    • Tracey Goodell – 2x GOLD @ Female Blue Belt Light & Open
    • Rachel Demara – GOLD @ Female Blue Belt Middle & SILVER @ Open
    • James Harbison – SILVER @ Brown Middle & Open

Team Lloyd Irvin ended up taking second place overall!  Ouss!

Jon “Devastator” Delbrugge came back strong with a Bronze medal in the Purple Belt Medium Heavy division and became Crazy 88 BJJ’s second Pan Am Medalist (only 1 more competitor to go – Mike Atkin tomorrow in the Brown Belt division).  Jon dominated his first two opponents and then had a close match with last year’s Silver Medalist, Elias Ramirez (Gracie Barra).  Jon took the narrow victory to enter the medal round where he lost on points to a tough Brazilian grappler who then went on to win the entire division.  With the Bronze medal, Jon gets a berth into the Purple Belt Open division tomorrow (only the medalists from each weight class are permitted to compete in the Open).

It was another AWESOME performance from Team Lloyd Irvin BJJ team as we went onto dominate the Blue Belt Open divisions!

    • Tracey Goodell: GOLD @ Blue Female Open
    • Sijara Eubanks: BRONZE @ Blue Female Open
    • DJ Jackson: GOLD @ Blue Open
    • Willie Leonard: SILVER @ Blue Open

Evan Gideon Adult Blue Belt Medium Heavy (<194.5 lbs) 3rd

Evan “Oz” Gideon became Crazy 88 BJJ’s first Pan Am Medalist this year with 4 wins and 1 loss. Evan had a strong performance at the Houston International Open of Jiu-Jitsu and continued his win streak through the early rounds before losing in the semi-finals to Marcus Sosa from Claudio Franca.  Good experience for Evan as he now prepares for the NY International Open of Jiu Jitsu in May.

Evan was part of a strong Lloyd Irvin Adult team:

    • Tracey Goodell: GOLD @ Blue Female Lightweight
    • Dominyka Obelenyte: SILVER @ Blue Female Lightweight
    • Kim Rivers: GOLD @ Blue Female Light Featherweight   *first tournament as a blue belt*
    • DJ Jackson: BRONZE @ Blue Middleweight
    • Willie Leonard: GOLD @ Blue Ultra Heavy
    • Kenny Brown: SILVER @ Blue Ultra Heavy

Evan Gideon is on page 3 of a 4 page bracket (at the big IBJJF tournaments, each ring operates a page independently of each other and the winners of each page face off in the later, usually medal, rounds) for Blue Belt Meio-Pesado.  Guilherme Lima (Drysdale BJJ) is also on Evan’s page – Evan won their last encounter 2-0 at the US Nationals but it was hard fought!  Teammate Frank Camacho will be taking care of business on page 1.  Interestingly enough, Frank’s first match will be against Shiloh Roberts from Rafael Lovato’s school, a grappler that Evan has faced twice already.

Roberto Torralbas is on page 3 of a 4 page bracket as well.  The big challenge on his page is Alex Baulding (Alliance) who is the returning World Silver Medalist.  Before Alex Baulding, Roberto might face Jeffrey Shulze (Gracie Barra), who at Blue Belt won a controversial Judges Decision over Jon Delbrugge.  Purple Middleweight is a notoriously difficult division so we should get some good matches out of the Third Law BJJ coach.

Jon Delbrugge has 3 matches to get into the Medal Round and 5 matches to win the Gold in the Purple Belt Medium-Heavy weight class.  The only name I know on his page (2 of 4) is Elias Ramirez (Gracie Barra), last year’s Blue Belt Pan Am Silver Medalist.

Mike Atkin will be competing Senior 3 Brown Belt Heavyweight (he moved up from Medium Heavy because there was no one in his weight division).  There are a few guys in this bracket that Mike has not faced before and Willie Rodriguez who Mike has competed against a few times.  Should be fun!

Phil Thorn Adult Intermediate Ultra Heavyweight (215+ lbs) 1st
    Open 1st
    Blue Belt Open 1st

Phil Thorn rematerialized in North Carolina for the US Grappling event held in Morrisville.  Phil went undefeated for the day, winning three Gold medals including the Open division 1st-place medals for the Intermediate No-Gi and and Blue Belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  In the Blue Belt weight class, there were no other Ultra Heavyweights so Phil was unable to get four!

It was a dominating victory.  Phil was unscored upon and won via Rear Naked Choke, 2 Armbars (1 from top, 1 from guard), and 7-0 in the No-Gi divisions.  His Gi opponents were also unable to score on him as he won there by Bread cutter choke, 5-0, 3-0, and 2-0 in the finals.  He exhibited good takedowns, taking all his opponents down that did not pull guard immediately, as well as a variety of different submission holds.  Eight wins to no losses – Not a bad day’s work!

    Great job Big Phil!

    Crazy 88 Blue Belts

Congratulations to Jermane Mathis, Crazy 88′s newest Blue Belt! He has been an successful active competitor in both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai competitions for the past few months and it was awesome to see him get promoted. Jermane had one of the best promotion tests ever, making it through the entire White Belt Roster without getting submitted! Great job from the 3x White Belt division Champion.

Good luck to Jermane as he enters the Police Academy in the coming months!
