JT Torres Takes Silver at the Brazilian Nationals

JT Torres Submitted World Champion Lucas Lepri in Upset Quarterfinal Victory!

Congratulations to JT “Spiderman” Torres on his 2nd place finish at the 2010 Brazilian Nationals.  The Brazilian Nationals is one of the toughest BJJ competitions in the World and the list of non-Brazilians to have medaled at the Black Belt level can be counted on one hand.  JT tore through his side of the bracket, submitting 3 opponents with chokes from the back and 1 with a toe-hold.  In the finals, he lost 2-2 (3-1) to Atos’ Gilbert Burns AKA “Durinho”.

With this strong performance and the victory over Augusto Mendes, previous World Silver Medalist, at the NY Open a few weeks ago, JT puts himself in solid contention for a Black Belt World Championship.

JT was accompanied in Brazil with two other teammates – Mike Fowler and Brown Belt, Jim Harbison.  Mike submitted his first opponent and won 6-0 in the Sweet 16 rd, before losing 3-0 in the quarterfinals.  Jim Harbison also did well, winning 3 before losing on points.  These guys are all on the mats training hard everyday and its great to see that dedication pay off.

Willie Leonard and Tracey Goodell proved that the hype behind Team Lloyd Irvin’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is 100% deserved.  Willie won double Gold – winning the Ultra Heavyweight and the Open division for Adult Blue Belts.  Tracey continued her win streak as well, winning Gold at Female Blue Belt Lightweight (Tracey already has top honors from the NY Open as well as the Pan Americans).

The Brasileiro / Brazilian Nationals is THE toughest BJJ tournament in the WORLD for non-Black Belts.  Critics and rival schools can say this and say that but bottom line – the results don’t lie!

Brazilian Nationals – Athlete Lists

The Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu JItsu Team is in Rio this weekend for the Brazilian Nationals. The Brazilian Nationals or Brasileiro takes place over two weekends with Blue belts and Purple belts competing the first weekend and Brown and Black belts competing the following weekend.

Willie Leonard and Tracey Goodell from the main school will be competing this weekend along with Tye Ryan Murphy, Jon Delbrugge, and CJ Melton from our Baltimore BJJ academy.  Roberto Torralbas, who runs Third Law in Naples, Florida, is the sole representative from his school.  I have posted the athlete lists for each of the competitors from Crazy 88 and will post the brackets if the CBJJ releases them online.  Good luck to all the competitors!
