The Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition team did not take a summer vacation and continues to compete all over the world. It was back to Rio de Janeiro for Crazy 88′s Tye Ryan Murphy and Third Law BJJ‘s Roberto Torralbas as they would enter the IBJJF’s Rio International Open, a 4-day tournament for <30 years olds, which runs concurrently with the International Masters and Seniors.

Tye Ryan Murphy started things off with a choke from the back after racking up 10-0 against his opponent from BTT (unconsciousness ensued). He then choked his second opponent unconscious with a choke from the front headlock position. In the quarterfinals, he faced eventual division winner, Luiz Fernado from Gracie Barra PE in Northeast Brazil and lost 2-0 (2-3) with some controversy. Apparently the scoreboard was not being updated and it read 0-0 (2-3) *Tye winning by one advantage* until the whistle blew in which case it was discovered that it was 2-0. During the match, Tye also had a sweep back so there was a lot of confusion over whether it was 0-0 (scoreboard) or 2-2 (mental count). Either way, a good showing by Tye. All part of the process for the 2011 World Championships!

Look for a longer writeup to be posted on our blog from Tye upon his return to the USA.

Blue Belt Medio (1 of 2)

Roberto Torralbas won his first Jiu Jitsu match 8-0 with 4 takedowns (!) and then took the back to defeat his quarterfinals opponent 4-0. In the semifinals, he faced Francisco Iturral (Alliance) who had footlocked his first two opponents. Unfortunately, Roberto ended up being the 3rd opponent to fall victim to the grappler from Alliance Ecuador – a “crazy” footlock as Roberto almost took his opponent’s back. Francisco ended up taking a fourth foot with him and won Gold. Roberto is icing up his ankle and is looking forward to the Open division tomorrow!

It was a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu overload this Saturday in Camp Springs, Maryland where Team Lloyd Irvin hosted Rafael and Guilherme Mendes for the first day of a two-day Jiu-Jitsu extravaganza. The brothers have actually been here since Monday, training with the team 3x a day, but today would be the start of the “official” seminar.

Rafael and Guilherme are two “prodigies” of BJJ and grappling (I use quotes because they have strong beliefs regarding talent and training). Both are World Champions at the Black Belt level. Guilherme is the 2nd person in history to win the Worlds at every belt in consecutive years and Rafael also holds a Gold medal from the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championships.

The mats were filled with enthusiastic students – some from Texas, some from New York, and even some from Florida! As a coach, I am excited to begin implementing some of the new drills, positions, and philosophies that we picked up over the course of the week.

Evan Gideon is on page 3 of a 4 page bracket (at the big IBJJF tournaments, each ring operates a page independently of each other and the winners of each page face off in the later, usually medal, rounds) for Blue Belt Meio-Pesado. Guilherme Lima (Drysdale BJJ) is also on Evan’s page – Evan won their last encounter 2-0 at the US Nationals but it was hard fought! Teammate Frank Camacho will be taking care of business on page 1. Interestingly enough, Frank’s first match will be against Shiloh Roberts from Rafael Lovato’s school, a grappler that Evan has faced twice already.

Roberto Torralbas is on page 3 of a 4 page bracket as well. The big challenge on his page is Alex Baulding (Alliance) who is the returning World Silver Medalist. Before Alex Baulding, Roberto might face Jeffrey Shulze (Gracie Barra), who at Blue Belt won a controversial Judges Decision over Jon Delbrugge. Purple Middleweight is a notoriously difficult division so we should get some good matches out of the Third Law BJJ coach.

Jon Delbrugge has 3 matches to get into the Medal Round and 5 matches to win the Gold in the Purple Belt Medium-Heavy weight class. The only name I know on his page (2 of 4) is Elias Ramirez (Gracie Barra), last year’s Blue Belt Pan Am Silver Medalist.

Mike Atkin will be competing Senior 3 Brown Belt Heavyweight (he moved up from Medium Heavy because there was no one in his weight division). There are a few guys in this bracket that Mike has not faced before and Willie Rodriguez who Mike has competed against a few times. Should be fun!

Three Competitors – Four Medals so far for Crazy 88 BJJ Baltimore Jiu-Jitsu Team. 100% Medal Rate for Team Lloyd Irvin so far.

Evan “Oz” Gideon dominated his two opponents, finishing his first one off with a triangle and then submitting his second with a bow-and-arrow choke. Due to a bracketing mix-up, Evan received a bye into the semi-finals but like they say, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” The final match was especially sweet as it was against an opponent that had beaten Oz 2-0 at the US Nationals last year. This time, Oz left no doubt as he passed, mounted, and finished his opponent from the back.

In the Open, Evan faced Daniel Robb (Gracie Humaita). Super close match with a single advantage giving the “W” to Robb.

Tye came back hard in the Blue Belt Open battling through some TOUGH early round matches. He won his Elite Eight match 0-0 (3-2) and then gutted out a win the Final Four. The score was 2-2 with two advantages for Tye. Tye’s opponent locked on a tight triangle but Tye held out until the buzzer winning by one advantage! In the Finals, Tye dismantled his opponent, mounting him and submitting him! Congrats to Tye Ryan Murphy on a BIG win!

Evan “Oz” Gideon should have some good matches and is one of the favorites to win the division.

The guy I fought in the blue belt division was actually a 4 stripe white belt from a De La Riva school whose instructor was there telling him to fight up because he was promoting him to blue belt this week. I beat the guy 11-0 and was very happy with the match. I had been telling myself to be more aggressive with submission attempts, and I threw a bunch at him. Pulled guard, broke him down and locked the diamond on him but we had to shift before I could turn it into the triangle because we were near the edge of the mat. Right away I put an armbar on him… turned it belly down but he had long legs and managed to step over my shoulder so I had to bail on it and rolled him back into my guard. Locked the diamond on him again but I didn’t control his posture and he got out. Sunk a pretty deep cross choke in and I thought I had it done there but he toughed it out for a bit so instead of burning my grips on the first match I let it go. He reached back and I locked on a triangle… he stood up, so I hooked his leg and swept him with it. I tried to come up into the mounted triangle but couldn’t quite make it al the way up on top and we got caught in a scramble which I won. Passing him and getting side control. I transitioned to mount, then S mount with his arm wrapped around his neck. He bridged and rolled me, I turned around and swept him back to mount one more time at the bell.

So that was gold. Not that I really counts, considering it was only one match and a blue belt who was a couple of days short of his actual blue.

Where it got all jacked up was that they had the blue belt and purple belt masters go first… then they decided to split the master an adult white belt divisions between two separate rings. So I had to decide which one to forfeit… so I bailed on masters and went for the adult division.

That match started well. Pulled guard (but guard pulls were as technically sound as I know how to do by the way… sleeve pulled tight, foot on hip, etc…) but I had a hard time keeping this guys posture broken. He kept trying to violator pass me, and on his third attempt he managed to get his knee wedged in. I grabbed his pant leg so he couldn’t knee cut and went to half guard… he wasn’t able to flatten me out and we fought from there for a bit. I tried to go deep half on him but he stymied it, then with about 45 seconds left to go I swept him. It was a sloppy sweep though, and I ended up in his guard instead of in side control. So at this point I am up 2-0. I had his lapel by his belt with my right hand, and I made a stupid mistake and stepped up with my left instead of my right. He hail mary armbars me… it isn’t too deep and there is 30 seconds left on the clock. I stand and he rolls me with it. It is deep, but I have my arm turned just enough so there isn’t any danger. I reach up to pull his leg off of my head and the guy yells “He tapped” to the ref… and the ref stops it with under 20 seconds left on the clock. Telling me he was afraid my arm was going to get hurt. I protested but there was nothing I could do.

And of course at this point I can’t go do the master’s division. So I am pretty pissed at myself and NAGA right now to say the least…

Crazy 88 was back in Los Angeles for another weekend of Jiu-Jitsu competition. This time it was the 2-day US Nationals run by the IBJJF. A total of 4 Team Lloyd Irvin competitors went out there with a shot at getting four medals apiece (Gi Weight, Gi Open, No-Gi Weight, and No-Gi Open).

Michael Florey was the first Team Lloyd Irvin competitor up and he did not dissapoint. After passing his first opponent’s guard, Michael used an armbar to get the tap. In the semifinals, he faced Dan Schon who was coming off a Gold medal at the Worlds this summer. Michael went to sleep rather than tap to a clock choke and ended up with a Bronze medal.

In the Blue Belt Open, Michael submitted his 1st opponent again with an armlock but lost 2-0 in the next round.

Roberto Torralbas jumped up to Medium Heavy for this tournament. He dispatched the Purple Belt in the quarterfinals with a choke and then passed Chris Engle (Team Mica) to make the finals. The Championship match was very even with Roberto trying to pass his lanky opponent’s guard. Despite his hard work, the scored ended up being 0-0 with zero advantages. The officials awarded the Gold medal to Roberto thanks to his aggression! Great job!

Roberto continues his win streak into the Open division, with a 5-0 victory. In the following round, Roberto again got up 5-0 and then used a bread cutter to get the tap. In the Final Four, two sweep points courtesy of James Puopolo (NW JJ Academy) separated our Cuban friend from a finals berth but he did get himself another piece of hardware!

Fred Ramie did not look like his normal self today. Fred squeeked out a narrow 2-0 victory in the quarterfinals over a grappler from Roger Machado’s team. In the medal round, he faced Fadi Khouri who outpointed him to enter the Finals.

Brad Court, one of our Black Belts, defeated Sam Joseph (Hollywood BJJ) in the first round, and then grappled Fredson Paixao. Fredson is a multiple-time Black Belt world champion and Brad gave him all he could handle. The final score was 7-6 in Paixao’s favor but Brad got everyone’s respect by taking the veteran to the wire.
