First Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Belt is…
Posted on July 19th, 2010 3 commentsChris “Short Round” Tran!
Chris has been training from 9 AM – 10 PM during the summer and exemplifies the attitude that we are looking for at Crazy 88. For his first tournament (2010 Grapplers Quest US Nationals), the coaches wanted him to do Intermediate and despite some personal and familial misgivings, he entered the tournament, and won all his matches by submission.
A few weeks later, Chris was asked to move up to the Advanced division, despite falling at least 2 years below the training time recommendation, and he again challenged himself, winning a Gold and Silver.
When not winning tournaments and training, Chris can be found aggravating David Zwanetz re: the Process.

Great White Belt In House Tournament
Posted on July 17th, 2010 3 commentsCrazy 88 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu held another In House Competition for Team Lloyd Irvin White Belts – this one was with the Gi. Over sixty grapplers from Ivey League MMA, Top Flight MMA, and Lloyd Irvin Martial Arts Academy (and about forty spectators) all made the trip to the mats of Elkridge, MD in order to get competition experience. As a team, we make an effort to plan out our training and competition schedule to peak in June, the month of the World Championships so this was the opening ceremonies. The tournament was run in a double-elimination format and seeded in order to give as many matches as possible to each grappler regardless of skill or size. Everyone had a lot of fun and hopefully, gained some feedback about what they need to work on!
Special thanks to Stephanie Reitmeyer for the photos. You can find more photos on the Crazy 88 BJJ Fanpage.

Five Medals after BJJ World Championships Day One

“Lawyer” Dave Zwanetz became Crazy 88 BJJ’s first World Medalist this year with 3 wins and 1 loss. Dave submitted his first two opponents relatively easily and won a tough semifinal match on points. Great ending to a long competitive season that began last year with the AZ Open.
David was just one of Team Lloyd Irvin’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Medal Winners:
- Anene Wynn: BRONZE @ White Female Lightweight
- Kim Rivers: SILVER @ Blue Female Light Featherweight
- Rachel Demara: GOLD @ Blue Female Middleweight
- Sijara Eubanks: SILVER @ Blue Female Medium Heavy
The Blue Belt divisions will restart, beginning with the Middleweights, tomorrow; our strong Purple Belt team will also be competing with new additions, Tracey Goodell and Willie Leonard! Although most of the BJJ Competition Team was in Houston for the IBJJF tournament, two of the Crazy 88 White Belts drove to US Grappling’s Submission Only competition in Virginia to compete. Travis Outten had another consistent performance. Brian “Jacare” Clifton had an awesome performance for a 1st time competitor – winning his No-Gi division and going on to win the Open. Great debut!

2009 Holiday In-House Tournament Completed
Posted on December 16th, 2009 1 commentWe were able to close out the year by giving some good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition experience to the White Belts on Team Lloyd Irvin.
Danny Ives sent his Severna Park squad from Ivey League MMA. Ron Stallings’ Top Flight team with Ron himself came to the event as well as the big boss, Lloyd Irvin, with a big squad from Camp Springs. The mats of Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu were packed with competitors, spectators, and coaches.
We divided the White Belt squads into an Advanced division, Standard division, and Baby division as well as by weight so all the participants could get good tough matches in that they could learn from. The Advanced division was won by Timothy Woods and JC Cuffee from Camp Springs, both who brought some serious takedown skills to the mat.
Overall, the event served its purpose of bringing the team together to meet each other and give the next generation of Team Lloyd Irvin competitors valuable experience. We at Crazy 88 BJJ plan to hold 2-3 In-House Tournaments in 2010 at our Elkridge martial arts facility so if you missed this one, we have more coming up soon!
PS – If you have some good pictures from the event, please e-mail them to us so we can post them!
