  • 2010 BJJ Worlds Results – Day 3 – Juvenile Team Takes 1st

Posted on June 5th, 2010 admin 2 comments

Great job today by the Juvenile Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team and Tracey Goodell.  Tracey ended up winning another Gold, this time in the Purple Belt Open.  Tracey was only promoted two weeks ago which drives critics crazy as they can not decide if we are sandbagging (forcing our competitors to fight in divisions below their skill level) or destroying the standards (by promoting our competitors too quickly) LOL!

JT “Spiderman” Torres and Mike Fowler were also up today for the pre-quarterfinal rounds of the Black Belt divisions.  JT submitted both his opponents with chokes from the back and will face Gilbert “Durinho” Burns tomorrow in a rematch of the Brasileiro finals.  Mike Fowler defeated Adriano Silva before losing on points to Abu Dhabi Pro Gold Medalist, Claudio Calazans.

Check out the team results below…

    • Tracey Goodell: GOLD @ Purple Female Open
    • Shane Hill-Taylor: SILVER @ Blue Juvenile Rooster
    • Cedric Bryant: BRONZE @ Blue Juvenile Light Feather
    • Jacob “Bro” Huffman” BRONZE @ Blue Juvenile Middle
    • Krystal Allen: GOLD @ Blue Juvenile Female Light Feather
    • AaRae Alexander: GOLD @ Blue Juvenile Female Middle, GOLD @ Blue Juvenile Female Open

Evan “Oz” Gideon was making bold predictions before this tournament and he made sure they came true - winning 10 matches to a single loss.  Oz tore through the Medium Heavy division, defeating notables Carsell Swain (Pan Am Bronze medalist) and wrestler Kenny Johnson (Machado JJ) in the early rounds.  On the other side, Manual Diaz (Sandro Batata) defeated two very tough grapplers - Pan Am Silver Medalist, Marcus Sosa (Claudio Franca) and 2009 World Medalist, Jason Boivie (Marin MMA).  The Championship match was tough but Oz pulled out the victory with a single advantage!  You can see the match on our Baltimore Martial Arts fanpage.

Because of his Gold medal, Oz was selected for the Open division.  Oz made the most his opportunity and made it to the finals where he lost on advantages to the Super Heavyweight Silver Medalist.  On the way, Oz was able to hold off Marcus Sosa, the grappler who had defeated him earler in the Pan Ams, and tie up the series.

    Oz Gazes Into the Abyss

Brad ”Fred” Pearson was on fire at the Worlds, hitting big takedowns, passing guards, and controlling from the top position and became Crazy 88 BJJ’s first World Purple Belt World Medalist in history with 4 wins and 1 loss. Brad stuck to his strengths, avoided his weak spots, and it showed his results.  In the finals, Brad got caught up in a front headlock and ended up losing on a heartbreaking 2-0 score but it was an awesome performance overall.

“Lawyer” Dave Zwanetz became Crazy 88 BJJ’s first World Medalist this year with 3 wins and 1 loss. Dave submitted his first two opponents relatively easily and won a tough semifinal match on points.  Great ending to a long competitive season that began last year with the AZ Open.

    Blue Belt Rooster

“Lawyer” Dave Zwanetz set a goal for himself of placing at an International level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament last year after he missed the World Championships.  He has been competing regularly since then and recently took Gold at the NY Open.  Having defeated multiple past medalists in local tournaments, Dave has a strong chance to get onto the medal stand this year in Long Beach.

Blue Belt Rooster (1 of 2)

    Blue Belt Light Feather

Clarence Melton came off a long Jiu Jitsu layoff with a vengeance, going to the BJJ Brazilian Nationals to compete.  He is looking to gain more experience at the World Championships with the intention of getting onto the medal stand next year.

Blue Belt Pluma (1 of 4)

    Blue Belt Light

Keith “Trainspotting” Cebula is coming into the Worlds hoping to utilize his strong Umaplata game.  Keith suffered a few setbacks during the Worlds training camp but has a strong gameplan and technical skills that will hopefully get him into the later rounds.

Blue Belt Light (5 of 8)

    Blue Belt Medium Heavy

A strong division for Team Lloyd Irvin with Evan “Oz” Gideon, Fred “Brad” Thomsen, and Timmy “#1 Stunna” Spriggs all separated throughout the bracket. Oz is a big medal threat, with 2010 wins at the Houston and NY Opens and also a Bronze at the Pan Ams. Also in the division are Jason Boivie (Marin MMA), Carsell Swain (BTT), and Marcus Sosa (Claudio Franca) who all placed at the PanAms as well. Jason Boivie was a medalist at last year’s Worlds as well.

    Blue Belt Super Heavy

Aung la Sang makes his IBJJF debut in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Super Heavyweight division.  Aung la was almost denied entry to the tournament when he forgot to register but pulled off a miracle when the IBJJF accepted a late email registration.  Fortune seems to be smiling on “Ong Bak” and that coupled with his hard training should lead to good results in the division!

Blue Belt Super Heavy (2 of 2)

    Blue Belt Ultra Heavy

“Big Sal” Washington came all the way to Long Beach for his 2nd tournament as a Blue Belt.  Big Sal has been working a lot on his judo throws as well as his guard and has been developing a game more akin to a lightweight than a 250 lb behemoth.  He is going for the close out with teammate and PanAm bronze medalist, Kenneth Brown.

Blue Belt Ultra Heavy (2 of 2)

    Blue Belt Female Light Feather

Cathy Tran-Zwanetz and Kim Rivers going for the division close-out.

    Purple Belt Medium Heavy

Jon Delbrugge ends up on the “Page of Death”.  All the international Purple Belt medalists of the past year ended up on a single page, allowing only 1 to advance to the medal round.  Janne Autio (Alliance), 2X European Open Gold medalist, will face Pan-American Silver medalist, BJ Nelson in the first round.  Brazilian Nationals Champion and 2009 World Silver Medalist, Joao Gabriel Rocha will face the winner of that match in the Sweet 16.  The winner of this page should go on to win the whole thing.

Purple Belt Medium Heavy (3 of 4)

Brad Pearson bumps up  a weight class to compete at the World Championships of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Brad is going to be utilizing his Go Go Go pace and strong top game to get onto the medal stand after a disappointing NY Open performance.

Purple Belt Heavy (3 of 4)

    Brown Belt Heavy

Mike Atkin comes out to California for another shot at the Adult division of the World Championships.  Old enough to be the grandfather of most of the World Competitiors, Mike still has the heart of a young gun and will leave it out there!  Ous!

  • Elkridge, Maryland Hosts Team Lloyd Irvin Worlds Training

Posted on May 15th, 2010 admin 2 comments

Training for the BJJ Worlds is heating up! Crazy 88 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was hosting the Competition Team practice for Team Lloyd Irvin this Saturday and the mats were packed with talented grapplers. Even with recent Brazilian Nationals Champion, Tracey Goodell, Jim Harbison, Mike Fowler, and JT Torres in Brazil, Camp Springs brought a great Brazilian Jujitsu Team up.  NY Open Champions – DJ Jackson and Frank Camacho were on the mats.  New Purple Belt, Brazilian Nationals Champion, and Pan Am Champion, Willie Leonard was there crushing people with his top pressure.  We also had veteran purple belt Lenny Maggio and new flexi-guard addition, Andris Brunovskis training.

Evolve Academy sent Pan-American Silver Medalist, Kenny Brown, and NY Open Womens Champion, Rachel Demara.  The Womens BJJ squad was joined by Nyjah Easton and Rita Floyd (Nyjah will be starting a Washington DC Childrens Program in the Summer).   From Leo Dalla’s, we had Kevin and Levi Sadr make the trip up.

The training was simple – non-stop matches for 2 hours.  Everyone got good work in with a variety of training partners.  One of the benefits of having a strong team right in the area is the availability of high-level training partners who can all push each other to the next level.  Look for a strong performance from Team Lloyd Irvin at the Worlds in a few weeks!

Nia Daniels Adult Blue Belt Medium Heavy (>152 lbs) 2nd
Mike Easton Adult Brown Belt Featherweight (<154 lbs) 3rd
Nyjah Easton Adult Purple Belt Super Featherweight (<118 lbs) 2nd
Jen Flannery Adult Blue Belt Super Featherweight (<118 lbs) 3rd

Mike Atkin decided he wanted to face the best grapplers in the World and entered the Adult division. He had a good battle with a much-younger competitor from Grace Florianopolis before succumbing to an armbar halfway through the match.

Nia Daniels proved that she is one of the toughest Blue belts in the World by defeating three opponents before coming up a bit short in the Finals. Nia is a beast and has been competing non-stop since she began training. She was promoted to Blue belt in April right before the PanAms so she has improved QUICK!

Mike Easton has got to be one of the most multi-talented Combat Athletes out there. Mike is primarily an MMA fighter but remains true to his roots and in true Team Lloyd Irvin fashion, is dedicated to improving his skills in all areas of fighting. Mike brought out his lightning-quick takedowns and guard-passing, even collecting two submissions on his way to the semi-finals. There he faced Joao Catisti (Godoi JJ Club).

Catisti, who had pulled guard in his earlier fights, surprised everyone with a quick double-leg. Mike swept Catisti back quickly and the match turned into a sweep-for-sweep scramble. In the end, the initial points would prove to be too much and Mike would lose on points. Catisti went onto win Gold. Great performance for Mike!

Nyjah Easton earned her 2nd International Medal, going 1-1.

    Nyjahs First Match

    Nyjah's First Match

Ryan Hall quickly submitted his 1st opponent and won a lopsided points decision to start the day off. In the quarterfinals, he faced Rubens Calasans (Oswaldo Alves), who had placed third at last year’s Mundial in the blue belt division. Calasans and Ryan both pulled guard from the get-go. Calasans quickly came up and earned 2 pts for a sweep. Calasans played a very tight game, forcing the under-over position, and leaving very little openings. Eventually, the Team Lloyd Irvin fighter hit an armdrag and managed to jump on the Brazilian’s back standing up, catching a TIGHT gi choke in transition. After the match, Ryan told me that he heard his opponent’s neck cracking. However, Rubens was a tough bastard and grabbed Ryan’s elbow and pulled him off his back, limiting Ryan to an advantage rather than 4 pts for the back. The match ended 2-0.

Ryan then competed in the Open division, catching a flying triangle and an armbar from the guard, before losing 5-0 to Super Heavyweight division winner, Gustavo Elias from Chute Boxe.

Julius Park won his first three matches 11-0, 9-0, and 4-2 before coming up short in his fourth match.

Roberto Torralbas had some tough matches over the weekend. In his first match, Roberto put an advantage on the board very quickly for a near-pass against his adversary from BJJ Revolution. With only a minute left in regulation, Roberto’s opponent came up with a single-leg. Both grapplers came completely to their feet before Roberto threw his opponent back to the mat with his signature Uchimata. The referee actually awarded the other fighter an advantage for a “near-sweep”. The match was now tied. As the fighters came to the middle, we were shocked when the official gave the decision to the fighter who had been losing for 6 minutes and had received his advantage on a very controversial call!

In the Open division, Roberto used his superior takedown skills to defeat a much larger grappler from Alliance. He then faced Alfredo Miras (Brasa), last year’s lightweight Gold medalist at Blue Belt. The Brazilian pulled a deep 1/2-guard from the buzzer but Roberto managed to smash him down, earning himself an advantage. It was a game of centimeters as both purple belts struggled to secure position. Miras managed to unbalance Roberto and come back on top for 2 pts. Roberto went into his own guard gameplan (funny because it was exactly what we had been working during his last visit) and swept Miras back with only about 60 seconds remaining. Roberto tried to jump on the Team Brasa competitor’s back and earned another advantage but the match exploded into a non-stop scramble. With only about 10 seconds left, Miras’ got in deep on Roberto’s legs and took him down, earning the winning 2 pts. Very good fight!

Despite not taking place in Brazil, the Worlds were definitely the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament, I have ever been to. I always leave them remotivated to train and with a greater insight into BJJ. For all the up-and-coming competitors at the school, I highly recommend you make it to an international-level competition as soon as you can. It has a slightly different feel than the local ones and often requires an adjustment period for new competitors. Get it over with now!

And like always, a special thanks to Medora for all the great pictures!

Amie Turton Adult Blue Belt Pluma (<118 lbs) 2nd

Amie Turton defeated Davina Maciel (Carioca Team), last weeks World Cup winner, in the 1st round 4-0. This was a big mental jump for Amie as Maciel had defeated her in last week’s final. Amie then faced a tough girl from Sao Paulo in the semi-finals. Amie handily defeated her 6-0 by taking her back and sweeping her. In the finals, Amie’s opponent scored an early advantage and held Amie down from the top of 1/2-guard to win a 0-0 victory.

A frustrating final match but Amie still brought back a World Championship Medal!
